Commerce Department Awards Bronze Medal to Silver Spring- and

Seattle-based Team for Fleet Computer Systems Implementation

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded its Bronze Medal to the Systems Implementation Team of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of NOAA Corps Operations.

The medal was awarded for the team’s innovative and effective application of computer science and technology aboard NOAA ships, enabling the acquisition and distribution of invaluable data for NOAA programs.

The team was presented the award recently by NOAA Administrator D. James Baker at a ceremony in Silver Spring, Md.

The team’s efforts have enabled NOAA ships to acquire, manage, and distribute large suites of oceanographic and atmospheric data. The systems they implemented, which include a Scientific Computer System, Multibeam Swath Survey System, Ship to Shore Electronic Mail, and Internet at Sea have moved NOAA’s at sea data collection capabilities to the forefront of the U.S. research fleets. The Scientific Computer System permits continual sampling of numerous atmospheric and oceanographic measurements with easy and ready access by the scientists on board or ashore. A part of the university research fleet has expressed interest in utilizing this NOAA-developed capability.

Members of the team include:

From the Software Engineering Branch, Systems Technology Division; Silver Spring, Md.

Alexandra B. Heliotis, supervisory computer specialist

Dennis P. Shields, computer specialist

David A. Benigni, computer specialist

William R. Bradley, electronics technician

Thomas N. Stepka, computer specialist

William C. Herrmann, computer specialist

From the Electronics Engineering Division, Pacific Marine Center; Seattle, Wash.

Edward E. Jones, supervisory electronic engineer

Paul J. Loy, lead electronics technician

Stephen R. Macri, electronics technician

Larry A. Loewen, electronics technician

The Bronze Medal is the highest honorary award given by NOAA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It is granted by the Administrator for a significant contribution to NOAA or the Department.
